5 things to know about granite sinks.

Advices

Granite sinks are very popular, although not everyone knows that they are not made of 100% stone but of a mixture of quartz sand of appropriate granulation and polyester resins. The term “granite sink” is, however, commonly used for remarkably durable sinks with a stone-like look. Good quality sinks should contain 70-80% natural aggregate and 30-20% resin, and it is worth checking the composition of a given model before purchase as manufacturers use different proportions of the ingredients while only properly made material guarantees resistance to mechanical damage, scratches, cracks and deformations caused by temperature differences.

What else should you pay attention to when choosing a granite sink?
  • The finishing and sandblasting intensity of the mould - there are models smooth to the touch and rough ones, and those where roughness varies between the bottom of the bowl and its walls.
  • The thickness of the sink - models less than 0.8 mm thick can wear out more quickly.
  • The number and quality of pre-made holes.
  • The place of installation - the sink, irrespective of whether it is a drop-in or undermount one, should not be placed in the direct vicinity of a hob, gas cooker or electrical sockets.

What else should a potential or current user of a granite sink know?

  1. Granite sink manufacturers give very long guarantees for their products
  2. A granite sink is heavy. A decent small sink weighs between 8-10 kg, while a large one - even up to 20 kg.
  3. Thanks to the fact that they can come in various forms and colours, granite sinks match most kitchen styles - they perfectly complement the furnishings of austere and minimalist modern kitchens, as well as a bit more cosy Provencal or Scandinavian ones. Combined with a granite mixer tap, they form an elegant and stylish interior design detail.
  4. Although granite has low porosity and does not absorb liquids, pouring coloured substances into a granite sink may result in unsightly stains on its surface (residues of wine, coffee or tea should be rinsed off with plenty of water).
  5. The sink surface can be impregnated with regular edible oil, but the use of special preparations will protect it from dirt and emphasise its extraordinary charm.

The choice of granite sinks is huge - there are sinks with different installation methods (drop-in, undermount), of different sizes (standard and non-standard), shapes (square, round, single-bowl, double-bowl, with a drainboard) and colours (their construction material is easy to colour with special additives). No wonder - a granite sink is a high quality sink, resistant to mechanical damage and most chemicals and looking like new for many years. As such, it is a popular choice among customers so manufacturers strive to outdo each other in available product ranges (offering even custom-made products). If you are to buy a sink, the best solution is to go to a shop to personally check how it looks and how it is made and finished. If the model you are interested in is only available online, it is worth betting on a proven manufacturer in order to avoid dissatisfaction with the purchase as well as the hassle of returning the sink and the shipment costs related thereto. It is best to choose a brand that has its own production lines. For example, Laveo sinks are manufactured at the company’s own factory near Poznań.

How to choose the perfect granite sink for yourself?
A granite sink should not only look nice, but also be functional so that you can create a comfortable workstation in your kitchen. Its size should be adjusted to the size of your kitchen (a large room or a kitchenette), the tasks to be performed (if you have a dishwasher, the sink will be used only for straining noodles or rinsing fruit and vegetables) and the number of users (a family, a single person), while its shape must fit the place where the sink is to be installed (e.g. a different sink should be chosen for a corner and for a cabinet standing under the window). Granite sinks are usually available in neutral colours such as white, black, grey or beige that match most interiors. When choosing the colour of your sink, it is worth considering water hardness - the harder the water, the more deposits it leaves behind. This, in turn, makes it necessary to wipe the sink dry. Yet another thing you should pay attention to is your comfort - manufacturers provide sinks of various depths - standard models are 14 centimetres deep, but deeper ones - of 16, 18 or even 20 centimetres - are more comfortable. If you cook a lot at home, often prepare dinner yourself or bake cakes, a deeper sink might be a good choice so that you can easily wash baking trays and moulds or large pots. If you are left-handed, you may choose a model with a drainboard on the left side. However, the vast majority of sinks are reversible, i.e. before installation you can decide on the side you want the drainboard and on the side you want the bowl to be on.

Aesthetic and functional granite sinks are a choice that needs no recommendation. Although they have opponents pointing out their disadvantages such as high weight and high price (from several hundred to even several thousand zlotys), the list of their assets is definitely longer. This is also evidenced by numerous positive reviews from those who have decided to purchase and install a stone-like sink. They mostly praise the material’s indestructibility and durability and its resistance to various liquids as well as the interesting design. A granite sink is a quality that simply pays off.
