Trends and Inspirations

Boundless azure sky above lavender fields and green hills, picturesque wineries, charming alleys full of sun, winding through stone houses, wind with a smell of sea, peace and quiet – for ages Provence has fascinated kings, popes, artists and ordinary people. It is thanks to those who wished to smuggle a little bit of rustic atmosphere and romanticism to their homes, the Provençal style was born.

Provençal style in interiors
Apart from modern, Scandinavian, industrial styles the Provençal style became a fashionable trend in interiors. Seducing with unpretentiousness, freedom, emanating with tranquillity, warmth, comfort, and yet so natural, still enjoys unflagging popularity among those who appreciate comfort and return to tradition and nature. Parlours, bedrooms, kitchens in Provençal style are cosy, classic, simple. The design itself is characterized by gentleness, combines very well with other, therefore allows to create some interesting arrangements.

What are characteristics of the Provençal style?

1. Natural materials
In Provençal style you will never find plastic, artificial, synthetic materials. Here wood (floors, furniture), stone (floors, walls), glass (decorative elements, ware), ceramics, wicker, linen are on the top.

2. Bright colours
Subtle, bright, romantic – in Provençal interiors you will most likely find toned colours, so off-white, cream shades, pigeon tones, broken by intensive violet, green and blue.

3. Traditional furniture
Interiors born in the southern France are decorated by furniture, obviously wooden furniture – made of solid or specially aged wood. This style can be characterized by numerous glazings, decorations or stylizations, e.g. tables on thin bent legs or armchairs referring to the times of Louis XVI.

4. Decorations and additions

Nice, useful and helpful additions (woven baskets, lace tablecloths) and decorations made of natural materials are carefully selected to match furniture, room size and each other well, so the room is not overfilled with items, while impression of rustic atmosphere and lightness is not obstructed.

How to furnish a kitchen in Provençal style?

If a room is already furnished with necessary kitchen appliances and furniture in other style, the Provençal charm can be added at a low cost and with small amount of work by providing many pots with plants and herbs, ware with ornaments (e.g. with lavender design), wicker elements (baskets, bread boxes, lampshades), light and ethereal curtains made of natural material (cotton), linen tablecloths with loose weave, soft violet, blue or green chair pillows. An effort can be made to replace the table for a wooden one with worn white and chairs for models with upholstery, if provided in the kitchen.

If the room has bare walls yet, the space to unleash creativity is much larger. Kitchens in the southern France are made of natural stone, teracotta or wood – when furnishing your kitchen consider laying wooden boards which will give it the right climate. Walls of Provençal kitchens should be bright and toned – they can be covered with paint, or tiles, decorative plasters, artificial marbles, and modern glass can be added. In large rooms consider using, whitewashed wooden beams, characteristic for rural French kitchens, on the ceiling and fireplaces with decorative ornaments. The other important element that should be taken care of to create a harmonious decoration is the door – it should be light, white, and if possible, with glazings, and furniture – wooden, in natural or toned colours, solid, not seeming heavy, though. Kitchen furniture is represented by numerous glazed and solid cabinets with milled fronts, handles made of brass, stone or forged iron, wardrobes stylized as old. The kitchen appearance will be more coherent if properly selected equipment is provided – sink (e.g. beige or grey Komodo granite sink), mixer taps (e.g. Evora upright kitchen mixer with L-shaped spout, available in four colour variants), large and small household appliances. What a Provençal window should be like? Certainly white, decorated with drapes made of natural materials, with a window sill occupied by a large number of aged pots with plants and herbs.

If the size of a room being furnished allows to separate a dining part, it should accommodate a table made of solid wood covered with linen tablecloth, chairs with soft upholstery or pillows in white and beige, grey, or pastel violet colours, and a lamp with lampshade made of natural material, i.e. wicker, cloth. What else cannot be missed out in the kitchen? Ware! In rural and rustic kitchen, ware with simple shapes, made of glass, clay, ceramics and bright china, very often featuring floral designs, e.g. lavender flowers, roses, olive branches, looks best. And of course decorations – you cannot forget about rustic, romantic trinkets, though Provençal interiors do not like excess of such at all. Their task is to provide an interior with warmth, cosiness, domestic nature, and keep it all calm and harmonious.

A bright, comfortable, not too much decorative Provençal kitchen is a warm and cosy place, ideal for cooking, having meals, spending time with the loved ones. Although it may seem that this style is dedicated for ladies, due to a large number of romantic additions or floral designs, the Provençal style does not really have to remain feminine – Provence is also fond of check and stripes, and such designs can be used to make kitchen appear “universal”. Provençal style indeed creates huge arrangement possibilities, so if you like domestic warmth, bright colours, opt for traditional and green solutions, then this is the one for you.
