The ABC of showers or what is what?

Advices

Showers are by far the most common solution in our bathrooms. Firstly, because of the limited space, especially in blocks of flats, and secondly, because of the comfort of use. Even in the case of bathrooms big enough to accommodate a bathtub, a shower is usually also installed there (or in a smaller additional bathroom).

The choice of shower solutions is quite large compared to other bathroom zones. First of all, you should decide whether you prefer a wall-mounted or flush-mounted option. The first one is more universal, as in this case shower replacement does not need to involve renovation and the old installation holes can be used for the new model. If you go for a concealed mixer, on the other hand, you have to take into account that its installation requires interference in the wall and is rather impossible without a complete renovation of your bathroom.

Types of wall-mounted showers

Basic shower models can be divided into three categories: shower columns, sliding shower sets and shower sets with a fixed bracket. Each of them - except for integrated columns - requires a separate shower mixer (or bath mixer) to be connected, which, on the one hand, means that you have to spend extra time looking for the perfect model, but, on the other hand, provides you with greater design possibilities.

What does a shower column consist of?
The construction of each column is basically the same. Depending on a series, models may differ in additional components that increase functionality and comfort of use.

  • A rail forms the base of a shower column. It supports all other column components. During purchase, it is worth paying attention to whether the rail’s length is adjustable to allow the column to be fitted to the height of its users, especially tall ones. Rails are usually 95 cm long, which can be increased up to 1.5 metres if the height of the overhead rain shower is adjustable.
  • An overhead rain shower usually comes with only one stream type, i.e. rain, but some multifunction models are also available, e.g. the Kvadrato column. The type of stream is changed by turning the overhead rain shower clockwise. Thanks to a special ball joint, the overhead rain shower angle can be adjusted to individual needs. Most of our rain showers come with an anti-limescale system in the form of protruding silicone nozzle endings over which you just need to run your hand to chip away the limescale and make the nozzles patent.
  • A hand shower is the most frequently used column component. It is used not only for showering, but also during cleaning (e.g. to rinse the shower enclosure or tiles that have just been washed, or to fill a bucket to mop the floor). The most popular are 3-function hand showers which offer the possibility of choosing the intensity of the stream by means of a switch located thereon. Our hand showers often come with an anti-limescale system, too.

  • A shower hose connects a hand shower to the plumbing system. Regardless of a column model, it is 150 cm long to ensure complete freedom of movement when showering. A good shower hose should have an anti-twist system that prevents unsightly tangling and makes it easier to put the hand shower back in the holder. Shower hoses can be extendible thus gaining about 30 cm in length.
  • A hand shower holder is located on the rail between the mounting brackets. Its height can be changed using the knob which also ensures that the holder is securely fastened. Its end, meant to hold the hand shower, allows you to change the hand shower angle and position it comfortably.
  • A function switch is a small, two-stage lever serving to redirect water flow between the hand shower and the rain shower. For convenience purposes, it is usually placed at the very bottom of the column. Most of switches are ceramic ones that can work regardless of the water pressure. Another type are switches in the form of buttons. In exceptional cases - especially when there are more options available to switch between - they can take other forms, such as for example the ring in the Rubio column (rain shower - hand shower - spout). • Mounting brackets are responsible for stable fixing of the column to the wall. The column rail passes through the holes in them. If you intend to replace your shower, make sure that the column has an adjustable fixing span. This will allow you to use the old holes for the installation.
  • A connecting hose connects your chosen mixer (in models where a mixer is not included) to the column, ensuring water flow. As a standard, connecting hoses are 70 cm long which allows you to adjust the distance between the column and the mixer to your individual needs.
  • A mixer integrated into a column provides connection to the plumbing system. Most mixer models are shower versions (i.e. without a spout), but there are also columns equipped with a spout, e.g. in our Rubio series, that are ideal for bathtubs with a screen.
A shower column mixer can be a thermostatic one, where a constant water temperature is set. This minimises the risk of scalding and saves on water consumption.
  • Accessories comprise various items that increase the functionality of a column. The most common are soap dishes, shelves for cosmetics or hangers for washcloths or sponges. (Cers, Drop, Fino)

What does a sliding shower set consist of?
Sliding shower sets, known also as shower riser rail sets, are simply shower columns without an overhead rain shower. As the name suggests, each of them consists of a rail mounted to the wall with two brackets. The rail is usually 70 cm long, which provides a wide range of hand shower height adjustment. The rail has also a holder with a hole for a hand shower that can be moved along the rail’s length between the mounting brackets. With the holder, it is also possible to change the angle of the hand shower. An integral part of the set is a shower hose connected to the hand shower.

What does a shower set with a fixed bracket consist of?
A shower set with a fixed bracket includes three components. These are: a hand shower with a shower hose and a hand shower bracket (holder) fixed to the wall, from which the name of the set originates. In this case, however, if you care for the possibility to adjust the hand shower angle, pay attention to the holder type, as not all of them offer it.
All wall-mounted shower sets can be combined with three types of mixers - wall-mounted shower mixers, bath mixers and flush-mounted shower mixers. The most popular set is a shower column or a sliding shower set combined with a wall-mounted shower mixer. Shower sets with a fixed bracket are usually combined with bath mixers to be used in bathrooms with no shower enclosure, equipped only with a bathtub. Combining shower sets with flush-mounted shower mixers is less popular.

What does a flush-mounted shower set consist of?
The shower zone is the birthplace of concealed shower sets, created to save space in shower enclosures. Due to the limited space available, everything was as much as possible concealed under the tiles. This also brought to life mixers that are easy to clean as they form an almost seamless surface with the wall. Sets for concealed installation are a modern solution in terms of both function and appearance, so it is no surprise that they are becoming more and more popular.

Each flush-mounted shower system comprises three components: a mixer, a rain shower and a shower set.

  • A mixer is the heart of such a set. It is responsible for turning water on and off, adjusting the temperature and pressure of the stream and switching it between the overhead rain shower and the hand shower. The most popular single-lever versions have a classic lever at the bottom and a function switch at the top. The latter can take the form of a ceramic knob, a pressure switch (in this case, the proper intensity of the stream is important) or separate buttons for each function (close-ups on the gold Pola, chrome Raila, black Volumo).

  • To make installation as easy as possible and ensure unhindered access to the components concealed in the wall, most our flush-mounted mixers come with a special box. It is a casing made of durable plastic, to be built into the wall. From the outside, the box has a decorative cover which, when taken away, gives you easy access, without the need to remove tiles, to the components that need to be maintained or replaced.

  • The set is topped by a rain shower. It is usually mounted to the wall with a spout, which can be also available as a ceiling version to hang the rain shower fully overhead. The rain shower is connected by means of a ball joint enabling you to set it at an angle for as comfortable shower experience as possible. If you cope with hard water, it is worth choosing a model with an anti-limescale system, which makes it possible to chip away deposits from the nozzles by running your hand along their protruding silicone endings.
  • A shower set, that is a hand shower with 1.5-metre shower hose, is a component almost the same as that accompanying the shower columns or shower sets described above. The only difference is the holder, which in flush-mounted sets was replaced by a special angular connector. It performs a double function - serves as a hand shower holder and a connection to the plumbing system. A typical hose is 150 cm long and comes with an anti-twist system to prevent it from twisting during use.

Even though most models from our particular product categories are very similar in terms of design, there are exceptions that, apart from their unique appearance, increase the functionality of the shower. An example of such an unconventional set is the Muro bath and shower mixer, which can be installed in three different ways: in full, without the overhead rain shower (bath version) or without the spout (shower version). Installing the entire set, you retain both the bath and shower functions which makes this model perfect for bathrooms with a bathtub with a screen. Another good choice in such a case will be the Rubio shower column, one of the few in the market with an integrated spout for easy filling of the bathtub.

All shower models can be successfully combined with bathtubs, shower enclosures with shower trays or walk-in ones, where an interesting set can be created with a linear drain
