Types of washbasins: steel, ceramic, granite

Advices

Although bathrooms are different in terms of style, furnishing, as well as habits of their users, it’s certain that in either of them a washbasin is provided. On top of that – it’s used the most frequently. You use it to wash hands, hair, laundry, brush teeth, shave…

Which model to choose is a matter of taste, surface properties and previous habits of users. Let’s however present essential properties of the most popular models.

Material

Ceramics Granite Steel

Ceramics is the most popular material of washbasins. Most frequently it comes in white colour. It’s characterized by a smooth, almost slippery, glossy surface which forms in glazing process.

Washbasins made of sanitary ceramics are considered the most hygienic (although other materials equal its performance) because of its surface finish. Ceramics is perfect for all classically furnished bathrooms. Traditional white models suit nearly perfectly most of toilets, bidets or bathtubs, whatever a manufacturer.

Granite until recently reserved for kitchen sinks, in a sense is a bathroom innovation. Washbasin surface, despite being smooth, actually (unless external decorations, as in Amber series, are concerned), seems to be rough. This visual illusion is created by quartz used in production process, appearing as characteristic dots. Granite washbasins resemble stone and therefore are perfect to underline a rough style of an interior.

Stainless steel, type 304, in particular, is appreciated most of all for its hygienic and strength properties. Washbasins made of it, are matte or slightly brushed in structure. Austere appearance of models made of steel, like no other material, underlines an industrial interior in loft-style bathrooms.

Often users worry that steel washbasins may emit unpleasant loud sounds, e.g. when any object is dropped. In our washbasins, the bowl is totally soundproofed which minimises noises.

Method of installation

Two types of washbasins are the most popular.

Countertop Furniture

Coountertop washbasins are placed straight on a top. These are bowls which have various shapes and sizes, and are provided with a single (drainage) hole in the bottom.

Their clear advantage are greater arrangement possibilities. Washbasin (on condition that there is enough space for a siphon underneath) can be moved to any place on a top.

When buying, pay attention to height of walls and select a cabinet of adequate size to guarantee comfortable use of washbasin.

Furniture washbasins are topmount models. Installation requires cutting a hole adapted to their shape or providing a specific model dedicated cabinet (mostly these are ready-made sets).

Such washbasins will be suitable especially in case of lower, elderly people or children, because height of a washbasin is not added to the height of a cabinet, so it’s easy to reach your hands inside.

Frequently furniture washbasins have a factory-cut hole for a mixer.

Resistances

Although properties of all materials can slightly differ and each of them – steel, granite or ceramics – they meet all requirements of harmonized European Standard PN-EN 14688:2006 and have Certificate of Health Quality of the National Institute of Public Health.

This means that all washbasins are characterized by similar resistances: to heat, impacts, scratches or discolourations. Each model will look nearly perfectly throughout many years, if only it’s used as intended and cleaned on a regular basis using suitable – best if dedicated to a specific material – agents.

So, when selecting a model for yourself, you don’t have to be guided by the material. Neither granite, ceramics nor steel will show evident signs after daily routines, and for example after colour cosmetics no permanent discolourations will remain.

Characteristic features

If you wanted to define what particular Laveo washbasins are characterized by, you would point the below aspects.

Ceramics Granite Steel

The greatest advantage of ceramic washbasins is their timelessness. They suit nearly any bathroom arrangement.

Granite washbasins are 100% made in Poland. They are designed in Łódź and manufactured at our own factory near Poznań.

Steel washbasin models are delivered with a click-clack plug colour-matched to either finish. That’s why you don’t have to worry about colour discrepancy.

What to combine with – which mixers?

Selection of a particular material of washbasin can be determined by fittings, as well. The thing is not about type of – washbasin mixers – upright low, countertop or concealed, which are selected according to own preferences, type of washbasin (countertop, furniture or with a hole for mixer), shape of walls (adequate spout reach allowing for free hand-washing) and hydraulic installation (wall-mounted, upright). It’s all about matching the style.

With colours derived from nature and surface resembling sandy coast, granite washbasins look best with colour mixers. Beige matches gold, exceptionally fashionable in the recent months, in both yellow and rose shades. Black granite forms an extraordinarily elegant set with fittings in the same finish. A unique compromise between these two finishes is grey granite which will be the most suitable for traditional chrome mixers.

As washbasins made of steel look the most ascetic of all, they are best matched with mixers of unique shapes. These are, most of all, modern collections of geometric shapes underlining an austere character. On the other hand, simple form and material are both an excellent company for mixer taps in retro-style.

Ceramic washbasins can be boldly put in one group with traditional chrome fittings. First of all, they suit one another in terms of colour. Each model is bright and has a glossy surface. Their matching also concerns the form. Sanitary ceramics and classic fittings are characterized by gentle, rounded shapes. Such combination of shiny white and glossy chrome is the most universal set which will find its place in any bathroom.
