Undermount sinks

Sinks

All those who wonder what is the best idea for a trendy arrangement of a kitchen should try an undermount sink. Undermount models are one of the most modern sinks due to their shapes and original method of installation. Please read about their main advantages and what to keep in mind before making a purchase.

Undermount sinks are a perfect choice for modern kitchens. A vast majority of them are single-bowl models of simple shape. Geometric, rectangular bowls are minimalistic and are perfect for undermount installation, underlining simplicity of the arrangement. Regardless of whether you choose a model made of either granite, steel or other material, the wow effect is guaranteed.

One of the greatest advantages, which users of undermount models mention, is cleanliness. As the sink is hidden under a cabinet, there are neither protruding elements on the kitchen worktop (like in the case of inset and overlay models) nor recesses where dirt and crumbs might collect. Flat surface allows to wipe any soiling and residues of spilt liquids straight to the sink. With this the worktop can be washed quickly and thoroughly, and keeping the kitchen tidy requires no effort.

The other advantage of an undermount sink is a possibility to move the mixer to any place. In fact, these sinks generally have no factory cut hole for a mixer. This means that such hole can be drilled non-symmetrically in relation to the outlet and a mixer can be placed slightly more to the right or to the left of the bowl, which might prove to be quite a facilitation, especially for left-handers. If you wish to have a unique arrangement, an undermount sink makes it possible to install a kitchen mixer all the way on the side rather than top of the bowl. Such extraordinary solution in dish-washing area will certainly enhance the attractiveness of the kitchen design.

Undermount sinks, as the name suggests, are installed from underneath a worktop. As a sink is concealed, an opening corresponding to the bowl size must be prepared with precision and meticulously finished. The other key matter is a type of the worktop. Due to the fact that with undermount installation cross section of the worktop is exposed on the whole outline of the bowl, there are some limitations. When choosing an undermount model you have to be aware that not each worktop is suitable. It must be made of material which does not absorb moisture. So wooden worktops and ones made of various types of furniture boards are excluded. You should opt for stone, marble or a special conglomerate. The stronger the material the higher the price, however it is worth investing in a worktop of a good quality as it will be functional for years and you will have a guarantee that no bulges after contact with water appear neither on the surface or at the sides.

Then, as it was already mentioned, it is essential to cut an adequate opening. Due to the fact that worktops designed for installation of undermount models are harder and more expensive, the installation itself should be done by experienced professionals who have suitable tools or by the furniture manufacturer.

When preparing an opening, you can use a paper template supplied with selected models, which can be found in the package, or mark dimensions on your own, which contrary to what is believed, is not that complicated and shows no difference compared with procedure in the case of inset models. Turn a sink upside down and mark its outline on the worktop. Then reduce the outline by the width of edges and you will obtain cutting lines. A correctly cut opening should accurately fit in the width of the bowl, and its walls must be in its interior, as illustrated below.

At the final stage of installation special clips are used, which usually are included with the purchased sink (these clips are different compared to ones supplied with inset sinks). If there are no clips in the packaging or they are lost, without any problem you can buy them in most of DIY stores. Despite the fact that worktops resistant to water and moisture are used, with undermount installation use of silicone is required. It is supposed to protect the surface of contact of sink edges with the worktop. This will prevent water dripping into the cabinet. Pushing down a sink with clips only will not guarantee a 100% tightness.
