Frequently Asked Questions

Won’t the drain clog more often for people with long hair?

The length of your hair does not affect the use of a linear drain. All Laveo models can be easily and quickly cleaned from the top after removing the grate. For every drain, its regular cleaning will ensure its patency and free flow of water.

How to unclog linear drains correctly?

In order to ensure the patency of your linear drain, its regular maintenance is required.

The grate and the drainage channel should be cleaned at least once a month to prevent the dirt accumulated in the drain from clogging the siphon. The siphon should be cleaned by removing dirt from its body, after having taken out the grate from the channel as well as the removable parts of the siphon.

It is forbidden to use cleaning agents containing chlorine and acids (e.g. toilet cleaners, sewer pipe unclogging agents, bleach, mortar removers).

If the cleaning according to the instructions has not allowed you to unclog the drain, this means that a blockage is in the drain pipes. Should this be the case, we recommend that you use a qualified plumber.

How to clean linear drains?

In order to prevent the grate and the drainage channel from becoming too dirty, including visible limescale deposits from hard water, they should be cleaned regularly, at least once a month. For cleaning, use a soft cloth and a liquid intended for stainless steel components (or alternatively, dishwashing liquid, descaler or 1:1 solution of water and vinegar). At the end, all cleaning agents should be rinsed with plenty of water.

It is forbidden to use cleaning agents containing chlorine and acids (e.g. toilet cleaners, sewer pipe unclogging agents, bleach, mortar removers). Furthermore, stainless steel components must not be cleaned with steel wool (e.g. metal scourers).

Is the drain’s glass grate durable?

The grates for the Basso drains are made of 4 mm thick one-sided tinted glass. A special tape is used for installation to prevent splinters from coming off if the glass is broken or cracked.

What is a sloped profile, what is it for and is it necessary?

A sloped profile for linear drains is an element that facilitates the finishing of a shower enclosure where a linear drain is to be installed directly at the wall. The profile masks the space that forms at the connection of the floor with the slope that allows water to be drained from the shower enclosure. Due to the small size of this area, it is difficult to finish it in a simple and aesthetic way using tiles. The profile looks very elegant and is easy to install.

A sloped profile is not a necessary accessory for a shower enclosure with a wall-mounted drain.

Dry siphon - is it necessary? When should a dry siphon be installed?

A dry siphon prevents unpleasant odours from escaping from the sewer. It is not a necessary accessory for a linear drain. Its installation is recommended in particular in bathrooms with underfloor heating and when the shower is not used for long periods of time.

The dry siphon fits the Basso series models. It can be installed at any time (this does not have to be done when installing the linear drain). To install the dry siphon, remove the grate from the channel as well as the removable parts of the siphon (in the same way as when cleaning the drain) and insert the dry siphon into the drain.

Do the tiles need to be glued into the grate or is it enough to just put them in?

It is recommended that the tiles are glued into the grate. This will prevent water and dirt from getting between the tiles and the grate, making it easier to keep the drain clean. In addition, this way the tiles are protected against damage (minimised risk of chipping at the edges). Furthermore, if the tiles are glued in permanently it ensures safe use of the drain as it protects against injuries.

Is this a reversible grate and can it be turned upside down during its use?

The reversible grate is a 2-in-1 model. On one side, it is a solid smooth stainless steel or glass grate (depending on the drain model chosen). When reversed, it provides a channel that can be fitted with tiles.

The grate can be turned upside down at any time. It is possible thanks to the special plastic spacers that should be installed in the correct position depending on which side of the grate you wish to display.

NOTE!

If you want to keep the possibility to turn the grate after the tiles are glued in, remember to:

- secure the holes into which the spacers supporting the grate in the channel are fitted, so that the tile adhesive does not fill the space required for their reconnection
- before glueing tiles in, check if the thickness of the tiles allows the grate to be turned its solid side up. In some cases, once the tiles are glued into the grate, it may be no longer reversible.

Can a drain be installed along both the long sides and the short sides of a shower enclosure?

During drain installation, the most important thing is to ensure the correct slope (at least 2%) and to follow the installation instructions. It is recommended that a drain is placed directly under a shower set or as close to it as possible.

As a standard, a drain is installed along a short side of a shower enclosure, but there are no contraindications to installing it otherwise.

Where to install a linear drain in the bathroom?

In order to maintain full functionality and proper drainage, it is recommended that a drain is placed directly under a shower set (rain shower) or as close to it as possible. Please note that the connection between the siphon and the sewage system should be as short as possible. A drain should be installed in a location where it can be accessed freely during its use.

Can a drain be installed in a shallow floor?

For shallow floors, choose a low linear drain - e.g. Slim or Basso. Before purchase and installation, it is recommended that you consult a specialist to assess whether the drain can be installed.

Is there a risk of water backing up out of a drain?

Water backs up out of a drain usually when the siphon is clogged. Regular cleaning and removal of dirt will ensure the patency of your drain and free flow of water.

Will my drain tend to become clogged?

It is quite natural for a drain to become clogged. Regular cleaning of the siphon from dirt will ensure the patency of your drain and free flow of water.

What is the risk of a drain leaking?

If a linear drain is installed correctly in accordance with the instructions and then properly maintained, it is guaranteed to remain leak-proof.

What is the minimum water flow necessary for a drain to work properly?

The minimum water flow necessary for a drain to work well is 2% in the direction of the waste stack.

How to clean a siphon?

Together with the drain the set includes a hook thanks to which we will be able to disassemble the grate (decorative element with a pattern or a ceramic tile) and reach the siphon.

Is the siphon equipped with a strainer?

All models of Laveo linear drains have dirt traps. A strainer protecting the siphon is provided for the Basso drain series. The siphon of the Slim series models, due to the drain’s narrow construction, is protected by a special insert that repels dirt into the dirt trap.

What are mounting feet?

Mounting feet serve for a quicker installation of a drain and its levelling in a bathroom or any other place where we plan to install a drain. Mounting feet does not have any other function.

How to choose the right size of a drain for your shower enclosure?

Floor linear drains (e.g. Slim, Basso) should be about 20-40 cm shorter than the width of a shower enclosure/recess. For example, if a shower enclosure is 90 cm wide, you should install a 50, 60 or 70 cm wide drain.

In the case of wall-mounted drains such as Basso, their size can be equal to the width of a shower enclosure/recess or about 10 cm smaller. For example, if a shower enclosure is 90 cm wide, you should install an 80 or 90 cm wide drain.
